Ingredients
Scale
Bread
- 8 thick slices Texas toast or French bread
Egg Mixture
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup half and half
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
For Cooking
- 2 tablespoons butter
Optional Serving
- maple syrup (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Bread: Cut each slice of bread into 4 sticks and set aside for dipping.
- Mix Egg Batter: In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
- Prepare Coating: In a separate bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon thoroughly and set aside for coating.
- Heat Skillet: Place a skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon butter. Allow it to melt and coat the pan evenly.
- Cook French Toast Sticks: Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off. Place them in the hot skillet, fitting 6-8 sticks at a time with space between. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Coat in Cinnamon Sugar: Remove cooked sticks from skillet and immediately roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. Arrange on a serving tray.
- Repeat Cooking: Continue cooking remaining sticks, adding butter to the skillet as needed to prevent sticking.
- Serve: Serve the French toast sticks warm with maple syrup if desired.
Notes
- Use thick slices of bread like Texas toast or sturdy French bread for best texture.
- Coat sticks immediately after cooking to ensure the cinnamon sugar sticks well.
- Add butter gradually to keep the skillet nicely greased for even browning.
- Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruits, or your favorite dipping sauce for variety.
- These sticks are perfect for kids and fun finger food.
